Following is a basic description of the process of solar etching. Although there are more processes into making a print,
these photos illustrate the technical approach of the solar etching.
STEP 01
The drawing/photo is exposed on the sun over the solar plate. Then a piece of thick glass goes over the solar plate allowing the ultra violet light to go through the solar plate. The picture starts then to etch into the solar copper plate. Each picture requires a different time in the sun depending on what effect the artist want to achieve.
STEP02
The solar plate is bathed in water and brushed softly. The solar plate is etched.
STEP03
Non-toxic oil based ink is going to be used to ink the solar plate.
STEP04
The red ink is being worked on a glass palette.
STEP05
The solar plate is inked.
STEP06
The Conrad press is being prepared. Pressure is an important component for successful printing.
STEP07
The cotton fiber paper has been pressed over the different blanket layers
and the paper has been printed by the solar plate.
STEP08
Zoom-in of the “Tablier de l’Artiste”.
